Since every driver depends on their vehicle to get them where they need to go, no one sets out to purposely damage their own car and cause auto repair issues. But there any number of bad habits that one may not even realize they're engaging in—habits that, if left unchecked, could cause serious problems and call for the services of an auto repair professional. Below, a few of these habits are discussed in more detail.

3 Bad Habits That Could Harm Your Vehicle

1. Not Using the Parking Brake

auto repairWhen you ignore the parking brake, you are forcing the entire weight of the vehicle to be shored up by a single, small bit of metal in the car's transmission. This is called the parking pawl, and because of its tiny stature and the burden imposed on it, it can wear away or break off completely. Engaging the parking brake—even when you're on a flat surface—takes the pressure off the pawl and prolongs the life of your transmission.

2. Always Driving With a Low Fuel Tank

Consistently driving with a quarter-tank of gas or less can damage a car's fuel system. A fuel pump often regulates its temperature by immersing itself in the gas that's in your tank. When there's not a sufficient amount of gas, the pump can overheat and break, which in turn leads to a trip to the auto repair shop and a fuel pump replacement.

3. Waiting Too Long to Brake

The occasional sudden stop is a normal part of driving. But if you're in the habit of always waiting until the last minute to brake, you're wearing down the vehicle's brake pads and bearings. What's more: frequent hard stops utilize more gas, so your fuel efficiency goes down as well. Be sure to leave plenty of room to come to a complete, easy stop whenever possible.
