Your RV provides you with countless hours of comfort when you’re on vacation. When winter arrives, though, it’s best to put it into a secure RV storage facility so it remains in great condition and is ready to go when the weather warms up again. Here are some steps that you can take to ready the vehicle for the off season.
How to Prepare Your RV for Winter Storage
1. Clean It Out
You’ll be grateful you took the time to deep clean your RV when you set foot back inside in the spring. Empty out all of the cupboards and drawers, wipe down surfaces, and vacuum the floor thoroughly.
2. Drain the Water
Your RV’s plumbing system is at risk of freezing if you don’t remove the water before it gets cold outside. To do so, drain the water and waste tanks completely and fill the system with antifreeze designed specifically for RVs. Some owners may prefer to have a professional do this for them.
3. Protect the Gas
Fuel stabilizer is recommended to prevent gummy deposits from developing inside the gas and harming the RV’s engine. For best results, make sure the engine is on before adding the stabilizer and then gas.
4. Add Tire Protection
Even if you’re planning to place your vehicle in RV storage, it’s still a smart idea to protect the tires so they aren’t at all exposed. While tire covers are usually used to prevent damage from potent UV rays, they will also keep the wheels clean throughout the season. Before slipping them on, make sure that the tires are inflated to the recommended pressure.
5. Cover the RV
Similar to protecting your tires, you may wish to place a cover over your RV even if it’s going to be parked inside a storage unit. This is merely for your own peace of mind, as it will create a barrier around the vehicle and help maintain its clean finish. Be sure to wipe down the RV thoroughly before you put the cover on.
