Maybe you tremble when your dentist mentions an extraction, or maybe you have a seriously damaged tooth and would welcome any kind of relief. Either way, knowing what to expect during a tooth extraction can reduce dental anxiety and help you recover quickly after surgery. Below are a few things you should know if your dentist suggests having a tooth pulled.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Numbing the Gums

tooth extractionBefore beginning, the dentist will inject a local anesthetic into the gums, which should be the only discomfort you experience. Afterward, you’ll feel a little pressure on your gums, but you shouldn’t feel any pain. Once both you and the dental staff are sure you can’t feel anything, they’ll start working on extracting the tooth.

Simple Extractions

During a simple tooth extraction, the dentist will usually grip the tooth with forceps or a similar tool, then rock it back and forth to dislodge it from the jaw. Teeth are held in place by ligaments, so you might feel quite a bit of pressure throughout this part of the process. However, with the powerful numbing agent, you shouldn’t feel any pain, even when the tooth pops out.

Surgical Extractions

If the tooth is too damaged to pull, the dentist might have to go in surgically. In a surgical tooth extraction, the oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum so they can get at the tooth, which they’ll then extract normally. If there isn’t enough tooth left, they might have to break it apart before removing. If the procedure is intensive enough, your dentist will put you to sleep for the entire procedure to spare you any unnecessary discomfort.
