The obesity epidemic, childhood diabetes, and other conditions have made it more important than ever to be conscious of your children’s diet. Poor eating can have lifelong consequences, which is why it’s a good idea to implement a healthy eating program at home. Although a weight loss diet may not be appropriate for kids, sticking together as a family can help them to learn positive habits early on.

Ways to Maintain a Healthy Diet as a Family

1. Remove Unhealthy Foods

Many of these types of snack foods are high in sugar and fat. This is a good time to get familiar with reading labels as well so you pay more attention to what fits within your family’s healthy eating plan.

2. Cook Family Meals

Cooking different meals for each member of your family takes time and makes it easy to deviate from your plan, so stick with a regular menu that everyone will enjoy. Meals should we well-balanced including a protein and carbohydrate source as well as fruits and vegetables. Make sure each plate has plenty of color, and try cooking family favorites different ways to keep things interesting.

3. Stay Strong

These changes will inevitably come with some complaining. It can be tempting to give into your kids’ will, or even your own, but you need to stay strong. Cravings will pass, and you’ll enjoy seeing improved results every day as you remain committed to your family’s health. Find ways to keep yourself and everyone busy; the more active you are, the more you can take the focus off of unhealthy foods.

If you have questions/concerns about your child and weight loss, please see your pediatrician and/or a Registered Dietitian.
