Many people drive on a daily basis, and winter conditions make the roads more dangerous. Icy surfaces, reduced visibility, and unpredictable drivers often make some accidents and personal injuries unavoidable, but many others can be prevented with some extra safety precautions. The tips below will ensure you arrive at your destination safely, even in inclement weather.

A Guide to Safe Driving in the Winter

1. Leave More Space Between Vehicles

Slippery roads make it more difficult to stop suddenly, while increasing the odds that you’ll have to respond to an emergency. The ideal safe following distance in snowy conditions is eight seconds, or 10 if visibility is seriously reduced.

2. Drive Below the Speed Limit

personal injurySpeed limits are calculated for ideal driving conditions, not snowy or icy weather. Driving even five or 10 miles below the speed limit will give you more time to respond to accidents and help you avoid losing control of your vehicle and potentially suffering a personal injury.

3. Look Out for Black Ice

While black ice may be transparent, it isn’t completely invisible. In many cases, it will appear as shiny spots in the road, and you may be able to see cars swerving in front of you. Slow down when driving over black ice, and be prepared to respond appropriately if your vehicle starts to skid. If you lose control, resist the temptation to step on the brake and jerk the wheel. Instead, let off the accelerator and slowly turn the wheel in the direction of the skid.

4. Keep Your Tires Inflated

Cold weather causes the air inside your tires to contract, potentially leaving them underinflated. During the winter, check your tire pressure once per month, and have tires replaced if you notice bald patches or uneven wear.
