Your roof protects you, your family, and your possessions from the elements. Whether you are dealing with summer storms or winter ice, it’s important that it stays healthy and structurally sound. But what happens if you notice your shingles are buckling? You should pull out your phone immediately, because it’s time to call the roofing experts at Walter St Clair Roofing.

What do we mean by ‘roof buckling’? When a roof buckles, it looks like there is something underneath the shingles on your roof, pressing them out from the rest of your roof. Buckling can be caused by a number of issues, but the three most common include:

  • Moisture. If your roof was installed incorrectly or damaged by storms, it’s probably not watertight. When rain gets into and underneath the shingles, it puts pressure on them, causing them to buckle outwards.
  • Poor ventilation. Hot air gets trapped in roofs and attics with little or no ventilation. Moisture, especially in humid climates, builds up quickly and causes damage to the framing or roof decking, leading shingles to buckle.
  • Improperly applied tar paper. Amateur roofers may not have the experience to properly apply tar paper (felt that acts as a vapor barrier) to your roof. The felt is supposed to be stretched before being applied beneath your shingles. If applied wrong, the felt will rise and buckle, which will cause the overlapping shingles to buckle as well.
