Roofs require regular maintenance in order to reliably shelter your home from the elements. In contrast to tasks you should always do, there are also some things you should never do to your roof.

Locally-owned, Cincinnati-based firm Walter St Clair Roofing offers the following tips for improving the longevity of your roof:

  • NEVER Drive Bolts, Nails or Screws Through Your Roof: This means no attaching satellite dishes, solar panels, or even Christmas lights, directly onto your roof or shingles. These types of mounts, especially with all that extra weight, invite damage in the form of roof leaks, and eventual rotting. If you must install these or other fixtures, ask a professional contractor for a specialized mounting system that doesn't involve puncturing your roof with nails or bolts. Eave brackets, for example, are one potential solution for mounting satellite dishes.
  • NEVER Let Leaves Pile Up: Always stay on top of your autumn maintenance, and make sure to clear out your gutters as often as possible. Piles of leaves left unchecked will get waterlogged, causing roofs to leak and rot.
  • NEVER Hang Basketball Hoops From Your Roof: If possible, mount hoops on a wall or garage door. With continual use, vibrations from the backboard will loosen the mount over time, creating negative repercussions for your roof.

Serving the community since 1923, Walter St Clair Roofing is a fully-licensed and insured roofing contractor who will be there for all your roof repair and gutter repair needs. For your free estimate, contact a professional roofing contractor today at (513) 641-3265.
