If you live in an older home, it’s likely connected to aging sewer lines. Regular sewer inspections are needed to ensure the pipes are free of blockages and still in good shape. During this checkup, the plumbers will perform several tests to determine the state of the lines and check water flow. One of these methods you may have seen a plumbing professional use is smoke testing.

Sewer Smoke Testing 101

What Is Smoke Testing?

Part of a sewer inspection involves checking for inflow and infiltration. Inflow allows water from insanitary fixtures — like toilets, sinks, and bathtubs — to enter the sanitary sewer system. Infiltration occurs when groundwater seeps into the wastewater or sewer system because there are cracks or leaks in the lines.

Smoke testing is a process that involves blowing smoke mixed with large volumes of air into the sanitary sewer line. As the smoke flows through the main and lateral lines, it will point out inflow sites, such as illegal roof drain, sump pump, or yard drain connections. It will also identify cracks in manholes or any fissures in the connected lines.

Why Is Smoke Testing Necessary?

sewer inspectionWhen inflow and infiltration sources are added to a sanitary sewer system, it increases the load on the system. If the sewer inspection detects this water flowing into sewer lines, your plumber can correct the problem. Inflow sources can often be stopped by installing lines that redirect the water away from the sanitary sewer. This will allow it to naturally soak back into the ground or make its way to nearby storm water sewers. Infiltration will require repairing or replacing the damaged set of pipes. If your home still uses clay pipes and you regularly have clogs and other plumbing issues, consider discussing full replacement options with a plumber.
