You turn on the furnace for the winter. Suddenly you hear booming, clanging, grinding, or a different disconcerting noise. While some may be nothing to worry about, others indicate the need for an HVAC contractor right away. To recognize the difference, here's a breakdown of these sounds.

Common Furnace Noises & What They Mean

1. Rattling & Rumbling

These two noises may indicate loose parts in your furnace or issues with the motor. They may also originate in your ductwork where other debris is blowing around. Rumbling, especially, can be tied to grime build-up on parts. Ultimately, only an HVAC contractor can determine the cause, so schedule an inspection if it occurs more than once.

2. Booming

Large bangs and booms can be the scariest noises—and issues can range from minor to major. In many cases, it’s just your ductwork expanding and contracting due to the heat, which is no real cause for concern. However, it could also be small gas explosions inside your furnace as a result of the burner not lighting properly. In such a situation, err on the side of caution and bring in an HVAC contractor.

3. Whistling or Screeching

HVAC contractor These noises are often the ductwork rather than the furnace. Air may be escaping out of loose connectors or a clog may be interfering with the flow. If the sound is coming directly from your heater, however, and is a harsher screech, parts may be grinding together, increasing the likelihood of a mechanical breakdown.
