There’s nothing like a roaring fire on a cold winter’s day to warm the body and heart. However, it’s important to keep your chimney in excellent condition to prevent the fire from becoming a catastrophe. If you have an older home, here are a few common reasons you might need chimney repairs

4 Reasons Old Homes Need Chimney Repairs

1. Blockage

Many factors can cause chimney blockages, including dead animals, leaves and debris buildup, and nesting pests. Insufficient chimney height or a too-airtight house can also prevent the air from flowing as it should. Obstructions and blockages are dangerous and must be addressed immediately. Smoke contains carbon monoxide and if it is not exiting the shaft as it should, will re-enter the home and poison the indoor air supply.

2. Flue Cracks

Chimneys are built with a lining, typically made of clay tile or stainless steel. Older chimneys are more frequently built with the clay, which will eventually wear out after years of stress and heat. Cracks in the clay can cause heat to exit the chimney, potentially reaching combustible appliances or substances. In addition to keeping the temperature in check, the flue also keeps fumes in place. If there’s a leak, carbon monoxide can enter the home.

3. Cracked Masonry

Eventually, the mortar will deteriorate as a result of exposure to heat and moisture. Moisture is particularly problematic in the winter, as ice will expand and contract, resulting in gaps between the bricks where more moisture can enter. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may require tuckpointing, in which damaged mortar is replaced.

4. Creosote

When the smoke goes up the chimney, soot and creosote go with it. Creosote is flammable, and excess buildup can cause a fire. Creosote can also obstruct ventilation, causing fumes to go back into the home. Routine chimney sweeping is crucial to prevent creosote and soot buildup and keep your home and household safe.
