Preparing for relocation can be a hectic process. From packing boxes to moving furniture, the increase in activity is bound to spark curiosity or anxiety in household pets. In the midst of planning, getting four-legged family members ready for the move shouldn’t be overlooked. Below is advice to cut down on their stress and make the journey as comfortable as possible.

3 Steps to Prepare Pets for Moving

1. Get Them Used to the Carrier or Crate

Whether you are moving locally or across the country, animals should be transported to the new home in hand-held carriers or larger pet crates. Doing so will keep them safe during the car ride. If your animal is not used to the confined space, slowly acclimate them to the temporary surroundings. Start by putting a treat in the cage, as it will make them more inclined to step inside. After, progress to moving the pet around in the carrier and going for a car ride. The activities will help them adjust to the feeling. After time in the cage, reward them with a treat. This will help them view the space positively.

2. Place Pets Off-Site While Loading the Truck

Cincinnati-Ohio-movingOn the day you move, keep pets with neighbors or in a closed-off room while movers put items in the truck. Otherwise, animals could get scared by the unfamiliar faces and the constant coming and going. If you keep the pets in the house while work is underway, pack their room last and keep the door firmly closed. This will prevent them from running outside and getting lost or injured during the hustle and bustle.

3. Let Them Adjust to One Room at a Time

Although you might be eager to let pets explore every inch of their new home after moving in, the change in surroundings can be overwhelming. To make the transition easier, introduce new areas in stages. The day you move in, let the pet roam around in one room with the door shut. Place water and food dishes, toys, blankets, and a few articles of clothing with your scent in the space. As the days go by, slowly give them access to other areas to investigate.
