Restorative dentistry services such as crowns and aligners once relied solely on PVS impression materials and powders to create molds of patients’ mouths. And while this practice is still in place, many professionals within the cosmetic and restorative dentistry industry have turned to CEREC® and iTero® systems. Both are computer-based design systems used to create restorations such as crowns, onlays, inlays, veneers, and aligners. Learn what sets these options apart from their traditional counterparts to determine if one is right for your dental needs.

What Makes iTero & CEREC The Best Restorative Dentistry Tools?

iTero Benefits

A state-of-the-art scanner, the iTero device uses highly-detailed imaging technology to quickly capture thousands of images of a patient’s mouth. These images get sent to the scanner’s base system to create a 3-D model of the mouth dentists can update as necessary.

restorative dentistryThe device saves significant time and hassle while also improving patient comfort since PVS impression materials can induce gag reflexes. iTero saves about 30 minutes of time per patient to help dentists run a more efficient practice. Additionally, the resulting prosthetics take less time to make and adjust because the images are so precise.

CEREC Benefits

Originally developed in the mid-1980s at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, CEREC technology requires coating the affected tooth or teeth with a tasteless, non-toxic powder before using a special camera to take 3D digital images. The images are uploaded into a computer system to create a restoration design that fits the patient perfectly. This design provides the instructions for crafting a ceramic restoration that feels comfortable and will not interfere with the patient’s bite.

CEREC restorations take minutes to create and in most cases avoid the need to use temporary crowns. The patient subsequently does not have to make a return visit after a few weeks for a permanent restoration. Crowns and other restorative dentistry pieces made from CEREC technology look and feel great, last a long time, and do not contain metal.

Dentists who utilize either of these innovative technologies are trained at the highest level to provide patients with the accurate, beautiful restorations they want.
