Though warmer months bring more ideal riding conditions, winter weather shouldn’t deter you from enjoying a bike ride. Cyclists do, however, need to winterize their bicycles and wear the right gear to prevent hypothermia or dehydration. Here’s what you should know before heading out on your bike this winter.

What to Wear for Winter Biking

1. Base Layer

The key to keeping warm is to dress in layers, preferably in three’s on your torso and two’s on your bottom half. Start with a well-fitting thin base layer of comfy, breathable synthetic sweat-wicking fiber or merino wool to keep you dry at the top, and opt for long johns or bibs on your legs. You can add a fleece top for added warmth, and don’t forget the chamois pads for your groins as well.

2. Outerwear

For outerwear, you can choose between soft-shell jackets and waterproof shells depending on biking conditions. Most cycling jackets keep you warm and dry, but look for ones that are breathable, seam sealed, and have two-way zippers, which can be useful to protect your arms and torso from the rain. Wear thermal, water-resistant cycling tights for your legs.

3. Head Cover

Before riding out on your bicycles, be sure to cover your head to reduce heat loss during winter or cold weather. Go with a wool stocking cap, headband, skullcap, or liner that’s slim enough for your helmet. For full-face protection, bring a balaclava or warmer to keep your ears and neck protected against the chill. Wear goggles or cycling glasses to cover your eyes from chilly winds.

4. Gloves

5. Footwear

When wearing socks, skip the cotton since it will absorb moisture and keep you cold when bicycles run over slush. Instead, choose moisture-wicking ones with lining for warmth and heat retention. You can add woolen shoe inserts for increased insulation between your feet and pedals. Wear oversized shoes or waterproof hiking boots to fit thick socks, then cover with insulated booties for extra heat and protection.

Wearing the right gears is essential for safe bike riding, especially during winter when you have to contend with slippery, ice-covered pathways and bone-chilling temperatures. Count on Endless Trail Bikeworx to have quality accessories you need.
