It’s no secret that the winters in upstate New York can be brutal. In addition to the typical winter attire of scarves, insulated jackets, gloves, it’s critical to have a sturdy pair of shoes to handle the snow, ice, and cold. Without the right footwear, you face a higher risk of slip-and-fall accidents, moisture problems, foot pain, and exposure to the cold. Here’s a guide to keeping your feet warm and comfortable this season.

What to Know About Winter Footwear

How to Pick Boots

Boots are the sturdiest, toughest, and most comfortable footwear for winter. For maximum versatility, look for a boot that will support you outdoors, but has an appearance subtle enough to wear indoors. Avoid boots that are flimsy or made out of thin materials that let moisture in – a problem that can contribute to fungal growth and irritation.

Instead, opt for boots that offer a thick, rugged sole for optimal traction. To insulate your feet from the cold, look for thick flannel, fleece, or fur-like linings. Boots made from water-resistant materials are best, such as synthetic rubbers, thick leather, and nylon. If your job involves outdoor labor or physical activity, wear work boots, as standard snow boots may not offer enough protection against foot injuries.

Layer Socks Properly

foot painBoots are your feet’s first line of defense against the elements, but they’re not all you need to stay protected in winter. Wear thick, moisture-wicking socks that will keep your feet warm, dry, and friction-free. If you suffer from excessively dry feet, be sure to moisturize the skin regularly to prevent cracking and irritation. Don’t wear two pairs of thick socks, as this will constrict blood flow and create friction. Instead, use thin, breathable liner socks for an additional layer of warmth.

Pick the Right Fit

Your winter boots should fit securely to prevent slipping, but be loose enough so that they don’t restrict circulation and cause foot pain. Choose a pair with adequate arch support so that you can distribute weight evenly as you walk and stand.

When trying on footwear, walk around in them to make sure you feel comfortable and secure. Test out the boots while wearing the typical socks you use during the winter to make sure they aren’t too tight.
