Many businesses depend on driving a commercial vehicle as part of their day-to-day operations. While routine maintenance visits to a truck body shop are recommended for all drivers, many others also need to have their vehicle in accordance with Department of Transportation requirements. But which businesses actually need to register with the DOT? Here’s a closer look.

Interstate Providers

Large vehicles involved in interstate commerce most likely need to register with the DOT and get annual inspections at a truck body shop. This holds true for vehicles that transport eight or more passengers, as well as vehicles with a gross combination weight for the truck and trailer exceeding 10,000 pounds.

Regardless of size, if a commercial vehicle transports hazardous materials, it will need to register with the DOT and obtain necessary safety permits. Vehicles that transport 15 or more passengers are also required to obtain DOT registration, regardless of whether they are used commercially or privately.

Intrastate Requirements

Businesses that use commercial vehicles should always check with state and county agencies for additional regulatory details.

As with interstate requirements, registration is typically required for vehicles and trailers that exceed 10,000 pounds in gross weight. Trailers weighing more than 15,000 pounds may also require additional axle brakes. Limousines and other commercial vehicles used for transporting fewer than 15 passengers will also need to undergo an annual inspection.
