Clogged drains are commonly problematic for homeowners across the country. Hair, soap, and other debris slowly accumulate in your sink or shower drain until they block the flow of water. There are several steps you can take to slow this process or fix an existing clog—but there are also some common drain cleaning pitfalls which may damage your plumbing. Here’s what you should try and what you should watch out for.

Do:

Use a drain guard.

A simple piece of metal or plastic over your drain can catch most of the hair and large debris which would otherwise enter your pipes. By using one and cleaning it regularly, you can seriously slow the process of clog formation.

Try hot water.

Sometimes heat can melt through greasy or scummy components of a clog to dislodge it. Turn your water to its hottest setting and let it run for a few moments, or heat some water on the stove until it’s steaming (not boiling).

Call a professional.

While you can probably dislodge a minor clog yourself, any particularly stubborn ones should be left to a professional. Your plumber will provide a more thorough drain cleaning than you can alone, meaning it will take longer for another clog to form.

Don’t:

Use chemicals.

While many products are advertised as chemical drain cleaners, the substances they use are harsh and dangerous. In addition to causing potential injuries, they can damage your plumbing and are bad for both sewer and septic systems.

Use boiling water.

Drain CleaningSimilarly, while hot water is helpful, water that is too hot can damage some kinds of pipes and hoses. Don’t pour boiling water down your drain, especially if you know you have plastic or rubber components in your plumbing.
