After investing in vinyl siding, you’ll want to keep it looking new to maintain your curb appeal. It will require little maintenance, but there are a few common mistakes homeowners make that can damage it. Here’s how to maintain your siding to keep it looking new for longer.

3 Tips to Keep Your Vinyl Siding Looking New

1. Don’t Paint Vinyl Siding

Vinyl SidingSome types of paint can cause older vinyl siding to deteriorate and warp. In particular, dark paint colors absorb more heat than vinyl can handle, leading to damage. Painting the siding will void your warranty, so instead, improve its look by cleaning it at least once a year.

2. Wash Gently

Harsh scrubbing tools can leave marks on your siding, so instead, clean it with a cloth or a soft-bristled brush and a mild all-purpose cleaner that doesn’t contain bleach or solvents. Clean the bottom of the siding first and work your way up, rinsing the cleaner away as you go. You can also power wash it using a low-pressure setting; a high-pressure setting can cause damage.

3. Treat Mildew & Stains

Mold extends beneath the surface of the object it grows on and also spreads spores around it. If your siding has mildew on it, simply washing the visible spots off won’t prevent it from coming back. Apply a solution made from one part vinegar and two parts water to kill the mold. For other types of stains and marks, such as engine grease, pencil marks, rust, or soil, use a stain-specific cleaning product to remove them.
