Many teenagers and adults turn to braces to help improve their smile. However, these efforts can be subverted if you don't practice good oral hygiene at the same time. Dentists warn that these bad habits could result in prolonged treatment, discoloration, and possible tooth decay. Below is a brief guide to help you take care of your teeth and braces.

4 Tips for Preserving Your Smile When You Have Braces

1. Brushing

Whether you have braces or not, use fluoride toothpaste to brush twice daily. Small, circular motions are best for removing bacteria and plaque. However, because orthodontic appliances can quickly wear out the bristles, replace your toothbrush often.

2. Flossing

According to dentists, flossing is a necessary part of oral hygiene. It helps loosen food particles and plaque that your toothbrush can’t reach. Though this task can be difficult for those who wear braces, use a floss threader or a water flosser to reach the areas under the wire.

dentist3. Rinsing

Dentists further recommend thoroughly rinsing your mouth with a fluoride rinse at least three times a day. This action will help loosen any food that may have gotten lodged in or around the braces and which may, otherwise, lead to decay.

4. Eating

Most meals are all right to enjoy with braces on, but there are some exceptions. Avoid tough foods like pizza crust and sticky sweets such as caramels and gummy candy that can damage the wires and brackets. Also, reduce how much sugar you consume to protect your teeth’s enamel.
