On a cold winter night, the last thing you want to worry about is heating system repairs. Unfortunately, whether there’s a power outage or something goes haywire with your furnace, there may come a time where you’ll have to troubleshoot and deal with the loss of your heat. To ensure you’re prepared when the heat goes out, here’s how to mediate the situation.

3 Steps to Follow When You Lose Heat at Home

1. Call Your Heating Contractor

As soon as your power goes out or you notice your thermostat struggling to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, call your HVAC contractor. If the issue is related to your system, ask if they offer emergency heating system repair services.

2. Reduce Heat Loss

Close your curtains, hang blankets over the doors, and place towels at the base of exterior doors to avoid drafts. If you have a fireplace, gather your firewood and get a fire going as soon as possible.

3. Get Cozy or Find Alternate Accommodations

Next, gather blankets, sleeping bags, heating pads and space heaters in one room where the family can congregate and stay together. Don’t forget to layer your clothing, bundle up, and get cozy on the couch to stay warm. If the source of your trouble is an extended power outage or if your heating contractor is unable to come and fix the issue for several hours, consider finding alternate accommodations for the night. Before leaving your home, open the cupboards around sinks and let your faucets drip to avoid freezing pipes.
