Many people have a fear of going to the dentist. Kids are especially prone to harboring deep-seated fears and worries over dentist appointments, thereby creating significant challenges to getting the proper dental care during their crucial formative years. Fortunately, there are ways you can help your child better manage their anxiety about going to the dentist.

How to Help a Child Manage Dental Anxiety

1. Don't Associate the Dentist With Negative Words, Ideas, or Images

Take the time to create positive connotations with going to the dentist. Don't use words like “cavity,” “pain,” or “drill”—these don't drum up light and happy feelings. Refer to the dentist as a friend and teacher, and present the appointment as an adventure to embark upon. Be curious and excited, and your child will pick up on your energy.

2. Keep Them Busy

3. Schedule a Pre-visit

Most dentists are more than willing to schedule a pre-visit appointment. This way, your child can tour the office, get to know the doctor and staff, and see some of the normal equipment used in dental care. This is also a good opportunity for your child to ask questions and have some of their fears allayed. When you make the initial appointment for your child, ask if a pre-visit would be possible. It could make all the difference to your child's anxiety.
