Indoor plants not only brighten interiors and fill the air with a pleasant aroma; the vegetation also helps remove toxins from the air to keep everyone in the home healthy. During winter, dreary days with minimal sunlight, drafty areas, dry air, and heat from HVAC equipment can cause some plants to die. Luckily, there are species that bloom in winter conditions, so you can enjoy your indoor garden all season long.

5 Plants to Grow Indoors This Winter

1. African Violet

If the air in your home is dry during winter, African violets adjust easily to the conditions. Although the plants prefer ample light, direct exposure could scorch the leaves and petals. To prevent damage, place them several feet away from windows that face east and north. Although African violets can withstand dry conditions, a bit of moisture in the air will help them grow, so place a humidifier in the room. Pour water in the planter when the surface soil is dry.

2. Jasmine

The white or golden hues of jasmine will add warmth to home interiors on cold, drab winter days. For ample light, place the plants in south-facing windows. If your home has limited natural light, put a fluorescent lamp near the planter. Humidity is also key to promoting growth, so place jasmine in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, or other areas with moderate moisture.

3. Bush Lily

Fairfield-Connecticut-plantsBush lilies are identified by large, dark green leaves and orange flowers on long stems. To bloom from late winter to spring, the plants need full to partial shade. Although lilies need ample watering during the flowering season in spring and summer, they will still flourish with drier soil during the colder months.

4. Begonia

Begonias bloom during winter’s shorter days with petal colors ranging from white to pink and fuchsia. They thrive in direct sunlight, so put the planters in east-, south-, or west-facing windows. Fertilizing monthly will help flowers last longer.

5. Cyclamen

Noted for vibrant pink or red petals, cyclamen blooms from December to April. To thrive, vegetation requires good drainage, so remember to water as soon as soil gets dry. Be careful, as water should be kept away from leaves and stems. Fertilizing bimonthly with a water-soluble solution will keep the plant healthy in colder temperatures.
