It can be tempting, at times, to dump any and all household waste down the sink and out of sight. However, certain substances disposed of in this way can lead to a clogged drain and costly repairs. To help prevent these adverse effects, here's a list of items you shouldn't introduce to your plumbing system.

What Can Cause a Clogged Drain?

1. Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds cannot break down in water the way many other foods can. Rather, if you dump them down the drain, the particles pack together and create a blockage. Fortunately, however, coffee grounds are actually great for composting, as they are nitrogen-rich, providing the energy necessary to turn organic matter into compost. To avoid a clogged drain, place the grounds in a compost pile or dispose of them in the garbage before rinsing out your mugs in the sink.

2. Grease & Cooking Oil

Instead of pouring grease or cooking oil down the drain, store it in the refrigerator for re-use or sop it up with a paper towel before placing it in the trash.

3. Pasta & Rice

Pasta and rice contain semolina, which refers to the hard grains that remain after flour is milled. Foods containing this substance can wreak havoc on your plumbing since it coagulates and swells once exposed to water. Be sure to properly scrape any rice or pasta off your plates before placing them in the sink or dishwasher.
