The first holiday’s after a loved one dies are difficult.  The anticipation of seeing family at the holidays is exciting however, if you have lost a special family member it can be like the big elephant in the room.  No one wants to bring up their name because someone may start crying. Grief is hard and special occasions are difficult.  It doesn’t get easier you just learn a new way of life that you can cope with. Talking about the wonderful memories, even though it is difficult, does make you smile and feel good.

Some families change traditions because it is too hard, others embrace and create new traditions to keep those loved one’s close.  Here are some idea’s of how to create some new memories to honor your loved one’s this Christmas.

  1. Create a memory tablecloth:  This is a great way to write down favorite memories and be able to look at them year after year.
  2. Adopt a needy family:  Some families want to brighten a families life by donating to a local charity that provides meals or Christmas for a needy family.  There is a lot to be thankful for and this is a great way to pick your emotions up during the holiday.
  3. Lay a place setting at the table: for your loved one at holiday meal.  It might help to have a jar on the place setting that if anyone wants to right memories they can place in the jar for the next holiday and they can be read.
  4. Send thank you notes: to those who were close to your loved one.  Thank them for their friendship and kindness. They are missing them too.
  5. Light a candle or contribute to a floral arrangement at church. The beauty of all the flowers during the holiday lifts everyone’s spirit.
  6. Donate to a local charity: If your loved one enjoyed animals donate your time at a animal shelter during the holidays and include your family.  Sharing the memories of your loved one helps everyone remember.

The Firsts of every year are hard but getting out and creating new friendships help your spirit and those around you. There are many people in this world and each of us carry our own burdens but helping others also helps us live each day to it’s fullest.
