Good oral hygiene starts when your child is still a baby. Their first dentist visit should be scheduled around the time they turn one year old. There, they will be introduced to brushing techniques. When they want to brush on their own, the list below describes ways to make sure they are doing so properly, as well as tips for good oral care.

How to Ensure Kids Brush Properly

1. Brush With Them

Kids don’t have the manual dexterity to brush effectively on their own until they are 6 or 7 years old. However, it is important to teach your child to brush and make it a part of their routine when they are still small. Let your toddler have their time to brush on their own, and then tell them you want to help. Praise your little one for time spent brushing by themselves.

2. Floss for Them

Flossing is important to do once your child has several teeth, but this will be beyond a toddler’s ability. Floss their teeth after brushing once a day to establish the routine and keep their smiles clean. Try flossing sticks for an easier experience.

3. Make Sure They Are Brushing

If you’re not watching, a child may claim to have brushed their teeth when they have not. Check that their brush is wet and that they were in the bathroom for more than a few seconds to verify their story. Even if they want some time on their own to brush, follow up by checking their teeth. Older children may not want your help, but make sure they understand how important good oral hygiene is and get toothpaste and other supplies that are kid-friendly.

4. Schedule Regular Dentist Visits

dentistDentist visits will be the proof that your child has good oral care routines in place. If you have trouble getting kids to brush, talk to the dentist for tips and strategies. Though your child will lose their baby teeth, care for these early teeth set up good habits and also a healthy mouth environment for permanent teeth to come into.
