If you’re leaving town for the holidays, vehicle storage will keep your car safe and out of the way when not in use. However, you’ll need to take care of a few tasks to ensure it’s in good shape and ready to use when you return. Here are four tips to help you prepare.

4 Steps to Prepare for Vehicle Storage

1. Change the Fluids

Your vehicle utilizes various fluids, including gas, oil, and coolant, to run correctly. However, none of these have a long shelf life. Not only will they break down and expire, but dirt and debris can accumulate in the fluid filters and damage components if left in the car too long. On average, these fluids last about three months. Use as much of the old fluids as you can, have the coolant and oil changed, and add fuel stabilizer before putting your car in storage.

2. Take Out the Battery

3. Clean Inside & Out

Remove all of your belongings, even if you’re storing it in a secure facility. Don’t forget to take out valuables such as removable sound systems and check under and between seats for anything that may have slipped between the cracks. Clean the interior and exterior as well, vacuuming the floors and wiping the dash. After, make sure the interior is completely dry since dampness may result in mold or rust. Once it’s clean, cover the vehicle to protect it from dust.

4. Jack It Up

Sitting for a long time can damage the tires as they hold all of the vehicle’s weight, resulting in flat spots. Put the car on jacks to relieve the pressure. You can also either remove the tires entirely or elevate the car high enough to take all weight off the tires.
