The quality of tap water can vary from one source to another, with higher or lower mineral content in each location. Water with a high mineral content is called hard, while water with a low content is called soft. While they may look the same on the surface, they can make a huge difference to your home and health, and even require you call the plumber more often, as it may impact your plumbing system.

Hard Water

PlumberHard water is full of minerals like calcium and magnesium, and sometimes other substances like metals. These minerals can form deposits on surfaces, especially with repeated exposure over time. Inside your pipes, these deposits cause narrowing. They also create rough areas on the walls of your drain pipes where hair and other materials can catch, causing more frequent clogs and more work for your plumber. Outside of your plumbing, minerals in the water cause spots on dishes and sinks, can turn clothes gray, and even make it harder to rinse your skin and hair, leaving them dingy. However, calcium and magnesium are also necessary nutrients for your body.

Soft Water

Soft water is low in calcium and magnesium but can be high in sodium content. This can create a salty taste. It can also have health implications for those who are trying to limit their sodium intake. However, soft water is better for cleaning, as it doesn’t leave residue behind. When it comes to your plumbing, there’s good and bad news: soft water doesn’t leave deposits but is more likely to cause pipe corrosion, so you may still need to call the plumber due to its effects.
