Old homes have a tremendous amount of charm, but they also tend to come with some pesky plumbing issues that worsen over time. Knowing some of these issues in advance will help you figure out when you should call your plumber. Here’s a guide to the problems that may pop up in a house that was built decades ago.

Typical Plumbing Issues in Old Homes

1. Warped Pipes

While the changes are often too subtle and gradual to perceive, your house steadily moves up and down over the years in certain soil conditions. As this nearly imperceptible movement occurs, your home may not look different, but your pipes may be harmed. The variation in pressure deforms the pipes or even breaks them, leading to leaks and lower water pressure.

2. Rusting Pipes

plumberMany homes built in the mid-20th century were outfitted with galvanized pipes. That means that the plumbing was made out of iron coated with zinc to protect against rust. As time passes, that buffer starts to break down, exposing the iron underneath to air and causing rust to form. You’ll know it’s time to contact your plumber and replace the pipes when you start seeing metallic discolorations in your water flow.

3. Deteriorating Fixtures

Just like any other part of a house, your plumbing fixtures have a lifespan, and when your home is old, it’s more likely that they’ve reached the end of theirs without being replaced. Whether you have a faucet that barely dribbles out any water or a toilet that has trouble flushing, these plumbing components eventually become beset by corrosion and clogs. While a plumber may be able to repair the fixture, in many cases it’s wiser and more efficient to simply invest in a new model.
