Whether you’re looking to improve your home’s energy efficiency or you’re planning a major renovation, upgrading your windows is a worthwhile investment. Newer windows offer better insulation, improved protection against UV rays, and are less prone to condensation. While the full process, including choosing the right models, placing the order, and having them delivered, can range from one to two months, the actual window installation process can often be completed in a day. If you’re wondering what it entails, here are the basics.

A Primer on Professional Window Installations

1. Removing the Old Window

First, professionals will use a crowbar to take off the trim in front of the window. This allows them to access the wood parts that firmly attach the window to the wall. Then, they'll remove the window itself; this requires a careful and practiced hand to avoid shattering the glass. Even though you’ll no longer need it, you should throw away the old window to prevent people from stepping on it and shattering it.

2. Preparing the Opening

Once the old one is removed, the installers will see if the wooden window opening needs to be repaired. It needs to be the right size and in good condition. Older homes are more susceptible to leaks and subsequent wood rot, so if it’s the first time it’s being replaced, don’t be surprised if there’s extra work that needs to get done. During this process, a waterproofing membrane will also be attached all the way around it.

After the opening is in good shape, the professionals will begin fitting the window. First, they’ll do a dry fit, which involves inserting the window without any silicone adhesive to confirm that it fits well. If it does, silicone can be applied to the wood of the opening and the window can be placed inside. To make sure the window is straight and level, thin wooden shims are placed between the window frame and the opening. After that, the windows will be screwed into place.

4. Finishing

Once the window is in place, it’s time for the finishing touches. New molding will be attached around the frame. Installers will also fill up any nail holes with wood putty that can be painted or stained to complement your decor.
