Winter weather can take its toll on more than just your daily comfort. If that chill reaches your pipes, it can also affect your home’s plumbing. While having a plumber on speed dial is a great idea, it’s equally smart to be aware of just how falling temperatures impact the system both inside and outside. Here’s what you need to know.

How Cold Weather Impacts Your Plumbing

The Most Common Winter Plumbing Concern

Frozen pipes are by far the most common problem for homes in the winter. Pipes may burst as a result of freezing, leading to extensive water damage. If your pipes do burst, you’ll need to turn off your home’s water supply and contact a plumber.

If temps get down to the teens and single digits be aware that your pipes will normally freeze. These are some tips to try to prevent this from happening: open cabinet doors under sinks to let the heat of your house help keep pipes warmer and leave your faucet running a small stream or trickle over the night. Be sure all your foundation vents are closed and there are no cracks or holes to let the cold underneath your house. Make sure all outside hoses are disconnected and wrap or insulate outside faucets.

Making sure your pipes are insulated good will help but pipes that are not in ground deep enough or where they come into the house will usually freeze and an electrical heat tape strip can be applied to short spans of pipe that may be prone to freezing. If you have a sump pump, keep an eye on the pump outlet pipe going out of the house to make sure the end of pipe is always clear and can drain any water it is trying to pump out of basement or under house. If the pump comes on and is blocked with ice or snow it could cause the water to come back into the pump area making it run continuously.
