Proper oral care is crucial for kids with braces; it helps prevent issues such as teeth stains, cavities, and gum diseases, which is why parents should watch what their kids are eating, as well as take them to the dentist frequently. Here is a guide to taking care of your child’s braces properly.

How to Care for Your Child’s Braces

1. Avoid Certain Foods

Dentists often provide guidance to kids with braces on what they can eat. For instance, hard foods such as nuts can damage their teeth. Sticky foods, such as gum and taffy, can get stuck in wires, leading to an emergency trip to the dentist. Also, kids should avoid eating apples and corn, unless they’re cut up, making them easier to consume.

2. Practice Proper Oral Hygiene

dentistLack of oral hygiene can lead to stains once the braces are removed. Additionally, cavities can also delay your treatment, since the braces may need to be removed to treat them. Your child should brush twice a day and floss daily, focusing on the hard-to-reach spots.

3. Protect Your Child’s Teeth During Sports

If your child has braces and plays sports, ask your dentist for a mouthguard. This will help protect your child against mouth injuries—if say, they are accidentally kicked in the mouth—and damage to the braces.

4. Use the Retainer

To prevent health issues, such as chewing difficulties, as well as teeth movement, make sure your child wears their retainer every night. Your child should also soak it in a cleaning solution and brush it daily.
