Now that winter is here, many homeowners are faced with snow-covered driveways. If you’re lucky enough to have a snowplow fitted on your truck, you can easily make short work of the removal process, at your property and that of others. Here’s how.

How to Safely Plow Snow Off a Driveway

1. Mark Off Your Property

When snow cover is thick, it can be difficult to tell where your driveway ends and other parts of your property begin. In this case, mark off your driveway using stakes to prevent damage to shrubbery and structures. Place stakes on either side at the top of the driveway and continue placing them every ten feet or so until you reach the garage. This precaution will also protect snowplow equipment, which may become damaged if you run into something.

2. Don’t Rely Solely on Rearview Mirrors

SnowplowBefore backing up your truck, physically turn your head to check your blind spots for obstructions. This is especially important to remember if you have small children or pets, who will be harder to see from your vehicle.

3. Know the Different Techniques

Back-plowing is good for shorter driveways. This entails moving into the driveway and lowering your plow, then going in reverse to drag the snow back to the street. With a longer driveway, consider setting up your plow before a storm is slated to hit. For instance, you can leave your truck at the mouth of your garage with the plow lowered. After a snowfall, angle the plow to simply push the snow to the sides of your driveway as you make your way toward the street.
