Vintage lighting can transform the ambiance of a space, replacing a boring light fixture with a work of art. Whether you regularly shop for antiques or are new to it, there are some things you should know. Use the tips below to find the perfect fixture for your décor style and lighting needs.

Guide to Selecting Vintage Lighting Fixtures

1. Look for Identifying Marks

Depending on the material, many vintage pieces will have identifying marks. For example, a silver lamp will have a mark of “925” if it is American sterling silver, and a mark of a lion with a year of creation if it’s English sterling. A ceramic piece may have marks painted on the underside; if it’s hand painted then its likely 18th century or earlier, while impressed or printed marks are common on more recent pieces.

2. Invest in Rewiringvintage lighting

International wiring won’t be compatible with U.S. voltage, while outdated wiring will be a fire hazard. When you purchase a piece, ask whether it has been rewired. If it hasn’t, then plan in your budget to have this done. Rewiring is a relatively low-cost process that an electrician can handle for you.

3. Get UL Certification

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification is recommended for installation in new construction homes. UL-approved fixtures are required to pass most electrical inspections, which ensure the fixture is properly grounded and using the appropriate wiring. You will need to find a UL subscriber who can have your fixture certified on your behalf.
