Unlike other sports, golf does not rely on a referee or umpire. Instead, players are responsible for upholding the integrity of the game. To do this, you are expected to follow certain rules of etiquette that demonstrate courtesy to other players and the field. Here are a few of the main golfing rules all players are expected to uphold.

What Are the Golfing Etiquette Essentials?

1. Keep Temper Under Control

It’s understandable to get frustrated during a game, but it’s unacceptable to become visibly and audibly angry. Screaming at other players and throwing clubs or other items is not tolerated at practically every golf course. Doing so could make the green dangerous for yourself and those around you. Good sportsmanship is expected when playing with friends or strangers.

2. Maintain the Golf Course

golfingWhen you make an impact on the turf, take the time to repair any divots created. Use your foot to kick the turf around the edges of the divot, and if the course provides you with a seed or soil mixture, use it to fill any spots where the ground was heavily damaged. Also, always use a rake by the bunker after hitting your shot to remove marks and footprints.

3. Be Respectful of Other Players

When your turn is over, be mindful of your fellow golfers. Don’t step on their putting line, and when your ball is on their line, offer to mark it. When another player is taking a shot, be quiet and relatively still. Also, always remember to silence your cell phone or completely turn it off, if possible, and do your best to not hold up the pace of play.
