Mice, rats, and other rodents will all intrude if they find a food supply and cozy nesting spot, and they’re not always easy to notice. Just because you don’t see a rodent doesn’t mean they aren’t there; a lot of times, you’ll only find evidence of their presence. There are several giveaways of rodent activity, and by familiarizing yourself, you’ll know when it’s time to call pest control for assistance.

3 Signs of Rodent Activity

1. Droppings

The most common evidence of rodents is droppings. You’ll find them around food sources where they’ve been snacking and around dark hiding spaces or crevices. The larger the amount, the closer you are to their nest. They’ll look like small black spots, and it’s a good idea to call a pest control professional if you find a large concentration.

2. Squeaking

pest controlAs quiet as mice and rats try to be when they sneak around, they give themselves away with squeaks. Since they’re nocturnal, you’ll likely only hear them at night. They’ll often come from inside walls and are accompanied by scratching and scurrying sounds as they move around. Look for entry points around areas where you hear the noises to see if you can find where they’re getting in.

3. Holes & Gnaw Marks

If a mouse has found your food supply, there will be plenty of holes in food bags where they’ve been feeding. Gnaw marks can also be found in these areas, possibly on wiring, which poses a safety risk. If they track grease, there may be smears along walls, in which case you can find where they usually travel. Signs of heavy feeding can mean you’re dealing with an infestation, so don’t delay calling pest control professionals.
