Decorations are a fun and festive way to beautify your property and get into the holiday spirit. But, particularly when it comes to outdoor lights, wreaths, and inflatables, it’s important to exercise caution, especially when affixing decor to the roof. Here’s what you need to know to show your spirit without damaging your roofing

Guide to Safely Hanging Holiday Decor

1. Check for Existing Damage

RoofingBefore you set out to hang your decorations, inspect the roofing system from the ground to check for existing damage, such as broken or cracked gutters or loose or peeling shingles. If there are significant issues, have them fixed before proceeding. Also, check your lights for broken bulbs or exposed wiring, as these are fire hazards. Plug in each strand to ensure they work before hanging them, and only use lights and extension cords rated for outdoor use. Indoor lights are not weatherproof.

2. Don’t Use Nails

Nails or staples will keep your decorations in place, but they may also  damage your roofing system or gutters. Nails and staples are particularly dangerous for drains as they can cause leaks, which will require professional repair. Instead, use plastic ties or clips. You can use these on both shingles and siding; just stay within the recommended weight limit per clip.

3. Map It Out

Plan where you’ll put the decorations to avoid spending more time than necessary on the ladder and your roof. Try not to walk on the roof if possible—doing so may pose a risk to the roofing system and your safety. You could cause shingles to crack or loosen and fall off. When walking on the roof, step lightly and wear flexible rubber-soled shoes to prevent damage. Finally, keep all decor far away from the chimney, as this can be a fire hazard.
