Understanding the type of skin you have will help you develop the right skin care regimen. Even with the best products, if you're not attuned to your specific skin care needs, you may develop dry patches or breakouts. To maintain your glowing complexion, learn which of the following four skin types you have and how to properly care for it.

What Type of Skin Do You Have?

1. Dry

If you experience flaking or periods of tightness in your face throughout the day, you may be dealing with dry skin. While genetics are typically the cause of dry skin, additional factors like diet, lifestyle, environment and hormone changes may aggravate the condition. To take proper care of dry skin, use a cleanser with gentle, moisturizing ingredients, like aloe vera, chamomile, or green tea.

2. Oily

While this skin type is less prone to wrinkling over time, it can sustain acne scarring if not properly balanced. When cleaning your face, select a product with natural exfoliants like jojoba beads and citrus acids to smooth the tone and texture of your skin. Avoid abrasives that contain crushed seeds or nuts since these can cause micro-tears in the skin.

3. Normal or Combination

Having normal or combination skin means you may experience slight dryness on areas like your cheeks while observing some oily spots on your forehead or chin. When caring for normal or combination skin, select a cleanser that provides moisture to dry areas while still offering gentle exfoliation to oily spots. Gel products are generally ideal because they absorb quickly and won’t lead to additional oil or breakouts.

4. Sensitive

If you have sensitive skin, you may experience burning, rashes, or breakouts when using typical cleansers. Because sensitive skin reacts to many products, talk to a professional about which options are best for you and introduce only one at a time. Look for products free of harsh chemicals and parabens to avoid adverse skin reactions.
