It can be challenging for children to process their emotions, which is why talking with them about the passing of a loved one can be incredibly difficult, especially when you’re busy making funeral arrangements. Compassion, sympathy, and strong communication skills are all needed to help your children through this challenging time. Here are some do’s and don’ts when talking to children about the passing of a loved one.

Do:

Be honest.

Often, parents are tempted to underplay how sick somebody is to protect their children from dealing with death. However, if you shield your kids before a loved one passes away, it may be harder for them to deal with their emotions in the long run.

Give only as much detail as they ask for.

funeral arrangementsOn the other hand, kids can become inundated with details about a death, which can be traumatic. Instead of sharing every detail about the death, funeral arrangements, and burial, only share as much information as your child asks for.

Don't:

Be afraid to tell a child you don’t know something.

If your child asks a question that you aren’t sure about, don’t be afraid to say that you don’t know. However, once they ask, try to find the answers for your child; this will help them process the loss. For instance, if your child asks about what happens to the body after your loved one passes away, contact your funeral director to inquire about what will be done with the body before the burial.

Minimize their emotions.

Avoid telling your child that they will recover from the loss quickly or feel better in a few days; this minimizes their emotions. Instead, focus on validating their emotions by being present, listening to their feelings, and talking about your own feelings.
