Hair loss can happen any time of year, but the wintertime can exacerbate thinning. Between dryness from frigid air and heaters and excess stress from holiday planning, the harsh winter months can take a toll on even the healthiest heads of hair. To help pinpoint these common culprits and how to address them, here are a few causes of hair loss during the winter.

3 Causes of Hair Loss During Wintertime

1. Dryness From Cold Air & Radiators

Winter’s cold air can dry out your hair, and radiators and space heaters that output dehumidified air can do the same. This combined effect can put a lot of stress on your hair, causing it to fall out more rapidly. To prevent these issues, protect your hair when you go outside by wearing a soft hat, preferably with a silk scarf underneath to prevent excess friction and breakage. When washing your hair, use a gentle shampoo to cleanse your scalp, and finish with a moisturizing conditioner. Regular haircuts can also remove any split ends, which will keep your hair healthier and promote better growth.

2. Excess Damage From Blow Dryers & Hair Straighteners

Straighteners can also weaken strands due to the direct contact with heat. To avoid these issues, try to give your hair time to air-dry by either showering earlier in the morning or showering at night, and if you need to blow dry, use a diffuser.

3. Holiday Stress

Stress often leads to hair loss, and it’s typically high during the holiday season. Between rushing around to buy gifts, coordinating travel itineraries, preparing meals for large groups of people, and running on little sleep, it can be challenging to manage stress. While you can’t reduce all of the stresses associated with the holidays, you can invest some of your time into self-care. Whether it’s morning yoga, reconnecting with a friend over coffee, or curling up with a good book, take some time to relax. By managing stress, you can protect your locks.
