A programmable thermostat allows homeowners to set specific temperatures for certain times of the day, saving both energy and money. So, once your electrician has installed your new unit, it’s time to learn how to use it in the most efficient way. Below is a short guide to the most effective practices when setting your new thermostat.

Setting a Programmable Thermostat

Make Sure It’s Compatible

Different types of thermostats are available, but not all will be compatible with your HVAC system. An electrician can recommend and install the best device for your unit. The technician will then demonstrate how to use it. If you’ve purchased a home with an existing thermostat, look up its user manual online using the manufacturer’s name and model number found on the thermostat.

Understand Your Thermostat’s Type

Seven-day programming allows users to schedule temperatures for every day of the week. Users can only plan a set temperature for the entire week, with a different setting on Saturdays and Sundays with a 5-1-1 thermostat. A 5-2 thermostat is the same as a 5-1-1 program, except Saturdays and Sundays are the same. One-week programming only accommodates one setting for the entire week.

Choose Settings for Top Efficiency

Keep your home at one temperature for no less than eight hours at a time. For example, set it to 70 degrees while you’re sleeping and turn it up or down according to the season while you’re at work. This can save you hundreds in utility costs. Also, avoid turning your unit up or down too much to heat or cool a room quickly. HVAC systems work most efficiently when given time to heat or cool at a gradual pace.
