During the fall, the ground temperatures are mild, there is a lower risk of pest infestation, and the days are still long, which is why it’s considered the best time of the year to plant new trees. However, there are still a few important landscaping guidelines to remember to keep your trees from developing problems. Here are three tips for planting trees in the fall.

Landscaping Tips For Planting New Trees

1. Don’t Add Fertilizer or Compost

After digging a hole that is twice as wide as your new tree’s root ball or container, you might be tempted to sprinkle a little fertilizer or new compost in the spot to ensure healthy early growth. However, landscaping experts actually recommend against fertilization, since it discourages the young tree from spreading its roots and creating a stable base for the tree.

2.  Stake the Right Trees

landscapingMany people assume that all young trees need to be staked when the fact of the matter is that staking the wrong trees can actually hamper their strength and growth. Only stake young trees that have a root ball that is small in proportion to the height of the tree. If the root ball is large in comparison to the height of the tree, the natural movement provided by the wind will actually help to strengthen the trunk.

3. Skip the Pruning

While pruning can improve a tree’s shape, it also injures the plant to a small extent and necessitates healing. To prevent causing unnecessary strain on your trees, skip pruning until they are well-established.
