While dental crowns are made from artificial materials, it’s critical to care for them appropriately. Without proper care, these devices may become damaged or contribute to other oral health problems—including cavities and gum disease. If you’re planning on getting a crown, here are a few important steps to keep in mind to keep your smile—and dental health—in good shape.

5 Tips for Dental Crown Care

1. Brush & Floss Regularly

Just as with natural teeth, dental crowns are subject to the build-up of plaque and food debris that may contribute to tooth decay or gum disease. As such, it’s important to maintain a standard oral hygiene routine to keep these devices clean. Specifically, aim to brush for two minutes at least twice a day and floss daily.

crowns2. Use Sensitivity Toothpaste

In the days after the crown treatment, you may notice the affected tooth remains a little sensitive—especially when you’re brushing, eating, or drinking. Use desensitizing toothpaste to minimize nerve activity beneath the crown and prevent irritation.

3. Rinse With Fluoride

In addition to brushing and flossing, it’s a good idea to use a fluoride rinse on a regular basis. These products help provide your teeth with extra fluoride—a mineral that helps keep enamel strong to prevent against decay. If you’ve had issues with decay in the past, using a fluoride rinse can help prevent the tooth under the crown from experiencing further damage.

4. Avoid Chewing on Hard Objects

The materials used to make dental crowns are incredibly strong and can stand up to routine chewing and biting. However, these devices still have the potential to become damaged, just as with natural teeth. To avoid cracking or chipping the crown—and the need for a replacement—avoid using your teeth as tools or chewing on ice or other hard items.

5. Shield Yourself From Staining

Unlike natural teeth, dental crowns do not respond to traditional teeth whitening methods. For this reason, it’s best to avoid dark-colored foods and drinks that can stain—such as red wine, tomato sauces, and coffee. Rinsing with water and brushing after eating can also help keep stains from forming. If you do become concerned about discoloration, ask a dentist about cosmetic treatments that can help restore the crown’s appearance.
