What exactly is the difference between 3-tab shingles and architectural shingles?

Asphalt roofs are quite common on American homes. But, what homeowners don’t realize is there are two different shingle designs that have different key features and specifications.

3-Tab Shingles

If you want a roof with a symmetrical look, this shingle design helps you achieve it. Three-tab shingles are made in only one size and shape with flat layers for less weight and fewer materials. Because of this, it’s more cost-efficient to purchase this shingle type if you wish to set your budget on other matters.

Three-tab shingles are also quite easier and faster to install because of their simplicity. But, since they aren’t as thick as architectural shingles, they have a shorter lifespan. However, you can still extend their service life by establishing proper roof care habits and scheduling regular maintenance by professional roofers.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles are very different from 3-tab shingles because they give your roof a dimensional exterior. They come in various sizes and shapes that imitate the look of shake roofs without the complicated maintenance of the shake roof system.

These shingles enhance the beauty of your roof and increase your home’s curb appeal. Compared to 3-tab shingles, however, they are thicker and heavier. Architectural shingles weigh approximately 50 percent more than 3-tab asphalt shingles.

Since they are more heavily manufactured, the architectural shingles have a longer service life and impressive wind resistance.
