When it comes to seeing clearly, LASIK eye surgery can perfect your vision and eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. If you decided that LASIK is right for you, it’s important to talk to your eye doctor about recovery. By preparing for both the procedure and recovery, you can make the whole process is as stress-free as possible.

What Can You Expect While Recovering From LASIK?

1. Vision Disturbances

You may notice some vision abnormalities. This often includes blurry or hazy vision, which is common in the first 24 hours. You may also see halos around your eyes, so remember that these are normal and generally go away in a few hours. These symptoms generally subside quickly, so you can return to normal activities the next day.

2. Discomfort

eye doctorDuring the first 24 hours after surgery, patients may feel itching and burning in the eyes once the numbing drops wear off. You can also experience sensitivity to light, so your eye doctor will recommend wearing sunglasses. Since many patients will have dry eyes as a result of LASIK, the doctor will also prescribe eyedrops to provide some relief. Remember that while some discomfort is common, you should call the doctor if your eyes are in severe pain.

3. Restrictions

The eye doctor may place some restrictions on your activity during the first weeks or even months after surgery. Initially, they may have you refrain from exercise and slowly reintroduce your normal routine after the first week. You should also avoid contact sports during the first month, as these activities can put your eyes at risk. In addition to exercise restrictions, the doctor may advise that you avoid swimming and wearing makeup for at least a week to protect your eyes from infection.

4. A Follow-Up Appointment

Most eye doctors will want to see their patients within the first few days following surgery for a follow-up appointment. This will ensure that your eyes are healing properly and that they are free of infection. They will also test your vision to check the effectiveness of the procedure. During this office visit, you will have a chance to bring up any questions or concerns about your recovery.
