Nothing boosts your confidence quite like a bright smile. By undergoing in-office teeth whitening treatments, you can help your teeth look their best. However, it’s important to care for this shine once you leave the office. In addition to talking to your dentist, consider the following whitening aftercare tips.

Do:

Commit to a hygiene routine.

It’s essential to optimize your cleaning habits to retain the results of your teeth whitening treatment. Ensure that you brush twice per day, floss at least once before bed, and use a dentist-recommended mouthwash. You may also consider brushing between meals and keeping floss in your bag for a quick clean. If you are on the go, pause to rinse out your mouth quickly after eating. These habits can remove surface stains before they set.

Use a whitening toothpaste.

Quit smoking.

If you haven’t already, it’s time to ditch your cigarette habit for good. By smoking after your whitening treatment, you will stain your teeth once again. By taking steps to quit smoking, you can prevent yellowing your teeth in the first place.

Don’t:

Eat staining foods.

Especially in the first 24 hours after your treatment, avoid food and beverages that can stain your teeth. This includes coffee, black tea, red wine, soda, red sauces, and soy sauce. After the first day, you can enjoy these foods and drinks in moderation. When you do eat or drink them, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth after.

Use colored mouthwash.

It’s generally best to avoid colored mouthwash and toothpaste in the first day or two after your treatment. These substances can stain your teeth, especially if they are bright red or blue. Your dentist can give you healthy alternatives that can keep your teeth white.

Skip your dental cleanings.

Set up your next cleaning appointment before you leave the office. During this appointment, the dentist can recommend ways to improve your dental hygiene and when you should come back for a teeth whitening treatment. This preventative care can help your pearly whites stay bright.
