Incessant itching, licking, over-grooming, or scratching all are indicators that your dog may have skin issues. Visit your veterinarian if any of these symptoms are present. Dermatological conditions are common in dogs and are usually treatable. The list below describes the 6 most common skin conditions in dogs.

Common Canine Skin Conditions

1. Allergies

Like, people, dogs can be allergic to common items in their environment. Food, laundry detergent, household cleaning supplies, shampoo, and even silicone dog dishes can be a culprit. Allergic dermatitis causes itching and redness that is exacerbated when your dog scratches, bites, or licks the affected area. Medication can help symptoms in the short term, but it’s essential to discern the allergen and remove it. Eliminating potential sources one at a time will help you discover the cause.

2. Parasitesveterinarian

Fleas, mites, and ticks all cause skin irritation and itchy bites. Mites can cause mange, which is indicated by hair loss, extreme itching, and sores. Certain types of mange are contagious to other animals, and fleas and ticks are also easily transmitted to other pets. Do not leave any parasite condition untreated, as they can lead to serious health problems as well as discomfort for your dog. Treatment for parasites varies. Ask your veterinarian to determine the exact parasitic infestation and recommend appropriate medication.

3. Dry or Flaky Skin

Dry skin particles visible in the coat are common and usually not serious. Climate and food are often the cause, and the condition can be helped by adding fatty acids to the diet or using a humidifier in dry climates.

4. Seborrhea

Seborrhea causes large flaky scales, greasy skin or coat, and may be indicative of an underlying genetic or hormonal issue. A veterinarian will be able to determine if seborrhea is present. Medicated “dandruff” shampoos for dogs may help alleviate symptoms.

5. Ringworm

This common fungal infection is characterized by a circular lesion. Hair loss, scabbed skin, and itching are the symptoms of this highly contagious condition. Puppies are susceptible, but it can occur in older dogs. Your veterinarian can provide anti-fungal medication.

6. Acral Lick Granuloma

Consistent licking of a particular area, usually the front legs or paws, creates open, itchy, or painful sores that can’t heal unless the dog is prevented from accessing the area. Topical bad tasting medicines or the Elizabethan collar are usual treatments. This compulsive behavior may be an indication of stress, anxiety, or even boredom and can restart after a current issue is healed. Talk to your vet about identifying underlying causes.
