Traditional funeral arrangements typically consist of a church service and burial. Funeral services are changing with the times, however, and cremations are becoming an increasingly popular. In fact, cremations are expected to become more common than standard burials by 2020. Though cremation is less expensive than a burial, there are other factors that impact this trend.

Why More People Are Choosing Cremation

Environmental Impact

One of the most significant trends contributing to the rise in cremations is increasing concern over the environmental impact of burials. Cemeteries take up large areas of land that could be devoted to forests or native plant and animal life. The type and quantity of materials used in standard burials have also been called into question, as large amounts of steel, concrete, and natural resources like wood are used to build caskets and casket vaults.

In addition, the embalming process uses formaldehyde and other chemicals. Formaldehyde, though naturally occurring, is carcinogenic and acute exposure causes adverse health effects. While there’s little data on how frequently embalming fluid leaks from buried caskets into soil and there’s conflicting evidence about its environmental impact, many are concerned about its potential harms.

For these reasons, cremation is seen as a greener alternative to burial, though it too has certain drawbacks for the planet. Ways to limit the harms of crematories, such as by using solar power instead of fossil fuel and repurposing waste heat, are on the rise.

Changing Societal Norms

cremationsThough environmental concerns have certainly played a major role in the shift towards cremation, broader cultural attitudes have also had an impact on cremation’s rising acceptance. Cremation was once a taboo in many religions, but this stance has since softened. Many religions now view cremation as an acceptable memorial option.

People are less willing to bury a loved one in a fixed location if they’ll need to relocate for school or work. The flexibility offered by cremation makes it a more attractive option for today’s world, with memorial urns or the scattering of ashes allowing for further customization.
