If you’re concerned about comfort and proper airflow in and out of your home, selecting the right HVAC system should take top priority. While many people look for energy-efficient units, others may find that a heating system that operates quietly is more important. Below are a few factors to consider before purchasing a replacement unit.

How to Pick the Right Heating & Cooling System

Efficiency

Efficiency of heating systems are measured by Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE. Though the U.S. required minimum is 78%, higher percentages mean less fuel is lost through cracks, leaks, or other inefficiencies. Furnaces must achieve 90% AFUE to be considered energy efficient. Air conditioner efficiency is measured with the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER. This ratio is cooling power output over electric energy input used in the same window of time, and the resulting number shows how efficiently the system runs. 13 is the federal minimum SEER, but higher ratios mean more efficient cooling. If you’re ever unsure about efficiency, look for an ENERGY STAR® seal on a system. To earn these labels, they must pass rigorous efficiency testing.

Comfort

heating systemsAir conditioning and heating systems offer comfort through temperature regulation throughout the year. You may choose from single-stage, multi-stage, or a modulating system. Single-stage systems have an on and off function, which results in a high variability in temperatures, which can reach either hot or cold extremes. Multi-stage systems have a high and low-temperature function, which helps automatically control temperatures better than single-stage.

Noise

Some homeowners prefer a quieter system that operates in the background. For quieter heating systems, look for a gradual startup. Smaller BTUs (British Thermal Unit) for each burner can also lessen the noise by requiring less work output. Insulated cabinets may also help reduce sound that comes from the unit. For air conditioning, look for modern fan blades and thicker sound blankets for noise absorption.
