Having your braces adjusted is a normal part of orthodontic treatment. While adjustments are necessary for correcting the alignment of your teeth and jaw, the subsequent movement may cause discomfort. Below are a few do’s and don’ts to help you ease the pain.

Do:

Apply ice to the afflicted area.

To reduce inflammation and swelling, apply an ice pack wrapped in cloth to your jaw. Keep the ice on for 15-20 minutes, rest and then reapply every hour as needed.

Use over-the-counter pain relief as needed.

bracesIf you’re experiencing headaches or jaw pain, painkillers like ibuprofen can usually ease this discomfort. Additionally, if you observe any sore spots in your mouth, oral anesthetics can be applied directly to teeth and gums to help relieve pain.

Don’t:

Eat hard or chewy foods.

While it’s best to avoid sticky or hard foods when you have braces, it’s even more important to follow these instructions after an adjustment. These types of foods can damage wires and brackets, as well as causing pain to an already tender jaw or mouth. Stick with soft, easy-to-chew foods while you wait for the discomfort to subside.

Make adjustments yourself.

You may be tempted to touch or push on those wires and brackets to figure out where the pain is coming from, but be patient and allow your mouth to adjust to these changes. The wires and brackets that make up your braces are durable, but that doesn’t mean you won’t accidentally damage something while trying to alleviate pain.
