Swimming pools are a wonderful amenity in a backyard or at a community center, especially when the temperatures are high. As fun as a dip in the water may be, staying safe is critical to prevent accidents, injury, and drowning. Following these five safety tips can help keep you and your loved ones safely enjoying your pool.

How to Stay Safe at the Pool

1. Adult Supervision

Make sure there is an adult watching swimmers at all times, especially young children. The adult should know how to swim and be close enough to the swimming pool in case an emergency arises. Keep a first aid kit and cell phone nearby in case additional help is needed.

2. CPR & First Aid

Ensure that everyone who uses the pool or supervises small children knows CPR and basic first aid. Also educate family and friends about the best way to handle a swimming pool emergency, and show them where to find safety and medical equipment if they need it.

3. Pool Gates & Fences

This prevents unsupervised people, especially children, from entering the water and getting hurt. Additionally, make sure ladders are removable and stored separately when the pool is not being used.

4. Regular Pool Maintenance

Keep swimming pools in top shape to stop illnesses and allergic reactions. Check chemical and pH levels to help keep rashes and eye and ear irritation from occurring. Inspect filters and circulation systems to ensure bacteria and other pathogens are moving out of the water to keep swimmers safe.

5. Posted Rules

Post a list of rules for the pool, such as no diving in the shallow end and no swimming without an adult. Remind children and guests regularly so they understand how to remain safe on your property, especially if you are leaving your family in the care of a babysitter or relative not used to the area.
