Having something stuck in your eye can be extremely uncomfortable. A foreign object also poses a significant risk, and many people end up damaging their corneas attempting to remove it. Instead, follow these steps and, rather than force it if they don't work, see an eye doctor immediately.

How to Safely Remove Objects From Your Eye

1. Flush It Out With Water

Look into a mirror. If the object is visible on the surface of your eye, fill up a cup of lukewarm water and slowly pour it over yourself. It can be easier with a second person—just make sure you both wash your hands thoroughly beforehand to avoid contamination.

2. Move Your Eye Around

You can also move your eyeball around to assist, but don't touch the eyelid, as too much pressure could lead to scratches which an eye doctor will have to treat. With luck, the object may become visible.

3. Blink & Swab

In many cases, small objects can be removed simply by blinking. Your lids and tears will naturally push it toward the corner of your eye. Once there, use a wet cotton swab and carefully nudge it from place toward your nose.

Always take your time with foreign objects. If you can’t make any progress, schedule an appointment with an eye doctor. They’ll be able to extract it and treat any irritation that may have occurred.
